The features that come with Rich Wilde and the Tome of Insanity might sound complicated, but once you start playing, you’ll realise that they are quite easy to understand. First and foremost, we have Wilds which power most of the game’s features. Then we have the Portal, which is a meter that charges with winning icons. There are three milestones that you have to pass in the Portal charging to unlock effect, or as Play’n GO calls them, runes. The Runes are essentially modifiers that boost gameplay as you. At the end of it all, when you charge the Portal, you unlock Free Spins. Let’s start with Wilds, though.

There are two different Wilds you should remember – the Book Wilds (regular Wilds) and the Multiplier Wilds.  Book Wilds trigger the Portal effects, while Multiplier Wilds come with Multipliers. In the base game, their values can be 2x, 3x, 4x, or 5x, while in Free Spins, they might also come as 10x too. Should a spin contain more than one Multiplier Wild, the highest one is paid out.

There is also a third Wild, which is the Yog-Sothoth, sized 2×2 that walks across the grid in random directions 3 times.

Now, Portal. The Portal is a meter on the left from the grid, charged with winning icons. Once you collect 8 icons, you get Ruin (the first Rune or Effect) which gives you only 2-4 Book Wilds added onto the grid. With 16 charges, you activate Harvest, which adds the same Wilds, but also eviscerates icons from the grid. The direction is 2 symbols away in all diagonal directions, and 3 symbols away horizontally and vertically. When the Portal is charged with 30 icons, you get Abomination, a rune that adds 2-4 Wilds again and upgrades a gem to a higher-pay icon.  When you get 48 charges, you enter the Damnation Free Spin.

The Damnation Free Spin is a singular spin with 3 Portal Effects (runes) that play out in a sequence. You can get another Effect if you overcharge it using 4 more icons, with a maximum of 7 Effects.

All-Seeing Eyes is another feature available both in base spins and the Damnation Free Spin. The All-Seeing Eye is a highlighted position on the grid which glows. If a win happens covering that position, you open the Eye which awards 2-4 Book Wilds. In the Free Spin, you get more All-Seeing Eyes, up to 12 regular and 6 special Eyes. If you open them all, you will unlock the Yog-Sothoth, and you also get a Multiplier.

OUR EXPERIENCE WITH RICH WILDE AND THE TOME OF INSANITY

In our minds, a mere mention of Rich Wilde makes us think of Egyptian slots. After all, he’s the star of the most famous online slot of all times, which also happens to be an Egyptian slot – the Book of Dead. In the Tome of Insanity, Rich Wilde explores a completely different universe, though. This one is fictional – made by horror writer H.P. Lovecraft – and much more dangerous.

The return to cluster pays and a 5×5 grid, alongside Yog-Sothoth, is great! We also loved how Play’n GO combined the features with the grid and made gameplay not complex, but stirring. You get to enjoy everything that’s happening the grid – and there’s a lot going on at all times – but you won’t feel overcrowded or overwhelmed. The math model is also quite suitable for players with different preferences. Ultimately, you stand to gain up to 5,000x the stake, which we also found decent.

All in all, it’s a good slot. Not great (it has big shoes to fill, so it really needs to be outstanding to beat Book of Dead) but also not terrible. A good recommendation from us, like always.
