HOW TO PLAY

While the game may look daunting at first, it is actually quite simple to play. The treasure map presented by Gonzo and the live dealer is the playing board. There are 10 rows and 7 columns for a total of 70 positions. Each one is a betting spot you can place a wager on. The goal is to guess which spot the treasure will land on so betting on multiple spots is a good idea to an extent.

Players will have 14 seconds to bet on the spots they wish and then play starts. First, three keyhole blocks used to activate the bonus game will drop on random spots. More on this later. Then, five treasure blocks randomly drop onto the board. Each one is always on separate columns of the board which is crucial to betting. If a treasure block lands on your betting position, you win a payout depending on the block:

  • Gold Blocks – Rewards the player 10x their bet
  • Multiplier Block – Rewards the player 20x their bet

Keep in mind that only one treasure block can drop per column with the rows being random. This is essentially the gameplay loop that revolves around guessing which tiles to bet on. You can either bet on multiple rows in a single column or multiple columns, both are a decent strategy for scoring.

The Treasure Map bonus game is the main extra feature of Gonzo’s Treasure Map live game show. The rules are quite simple so let us go over them. Remember those keyhole blocks that appear at the start of the round? Well if you bet on a segment where the keyhole appears and you win, you advance to the bonus round. In case the winning position was a multiplier block, all winnings in the bonus game are doubled.

Once in a bonus game, Gonzo and the live dealer will reveal a new wall of 70 different stone slabs each with a random multiplier. They can range from 25x the bet to 500x the bet with the lower ones being more frequent. There will also be x2 titles used to boost all other segments.

From here, a ruby block will randomly drop on a single tile and two things can happen:

  1. Win – If the ruby lands on a multiplier all players in the bonus round have their base game win multiplied by the winning position’s value
  2. Boost – If the ruby lands on a x2 block then all other blocks are multiplied by x2 and the ruby drops again

In the case of the second outcome, play continues until the ruby lands on a multiplier.

Gonzo’s Treasure Map is a fun remake of Evolution’s previous game Gonzo’s Treasure Hunt. With simplified gameplay, it is much more accessible to a wider audience. However, RTP seems to have suffered quite a bit with 95.26% being quite a low value.

The visual interface and character animations and interactions of Gonzo and the live dealer are quite immersive though. As for gameplay value, it is quite entertaining as well. It seems that Evolution went all in in the presentation without improving the mathematical payout model of the game. All in all, Gonzo’s Treasure Map is a fun game to take a few spins on, but it is nowhere near worthwhile to play over an extended period of time.
