Beginning January 1, 2025, all game suppliers intending to provide services to gambling operators licensed in Denmark must obtain a license from the Danish Gambling Authority.
The application window for anyone looking for a local license opened on September 1st.
This is likely to result in a reduced variety of casino games available to Danish players. However, overall safety should improve as the Danish authority increases its control of which games and suppliers are allowed access to locally licensed casinos.
To facilitate this transition, the Danish Gambling Authority has created guidance materials and made application forms available online. Interested parties can access detailed information in the “Game Suppliers” section of the Danish Gambling Authority’s website.
The Danish Gambling Authority mandates that the games, platforms, business practices, and systems of game suppliers undergo testing and evaluation by an accredited testing organization. These assessments must comply with the Danish Gambling Authority’s certification program prior to any games being offered to gambling operators.
A revised certification program is currently under development, which will delineate the responsibilities of both operators and game suppliers. This new program has been readily available since July 2024, but wholesale implementation is scheduled for January 1, 2025.
Alongside the introduction of supplier licenses, the Danish Gambling Authority will unveil a new portal for managing game certificates. It has been referred to as the ‘Games Register.’
The goal of the portal is to make the transition to the new regulations as smooth as possible. Importantly, existing game certificates and certifications under the current program will continue to be valid.
This is great news for Danish fans of casino games because it means most suppliers’ back catalogues will still be available.
However, beginning July 1, 2025, compliance with the new certification program will be compulsory. Game suppliers and operators are therefore encouraged to embrace the updated program as early as possible.
